Montenegro is a bird’s paradise!
It is home to more than 330 bird species, through its dunes, rivers, mountains and lakes
During this 6 days birdwatching tour, we will visit Lake Skadar National Park, one of Europe’s top five sites for migratory birds, we will see the rare Dalmatian Pelican, the world’s second largest colony of Pygmy Cormorant and different alpine species, such as Nutcracker and Three-toed Woodpecker, while exploring the ancient forests in the mountainous region of Durmitor National Park.

Arrival at Podgorica Airport and transfer to the hotel. Free afternoon in Podgorica to explore the city center on your own.

Podgorica – Kolasin (1.5 hrs) Biogradska Gora National Park

Leaving the capital, we drive towards the mountain village of Kolasin, and the National Park of Biogradska Gora
We visit the park, One of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, this are is one of the last three large virgin forests in Europe. The landscape is one of mountain ridges, glacial lakes, and temperate forest. Although it is the smallest of four National Parks in Montenegro, Biogradska Gora National Park contains a big diversity of flora and fauna, including 220 different plants, 150 kinds of birds, 86 kinds of trees.
We enjoy a walk in the Biogadsko lake, located at an altitude of 1094m . Biogradsko lake is situated in the heart of the primeval forest, the biggest and the best known in the range of the glacial lakes within the National Park. It is also home to a variety of bird species including Crested Tit, Yellow and Blue Tits, raptors including Imperial Eagle.
We spend the afternoon in Kolasin, the small village surrounded by high mountains and the two rivers, Tara and Moraca. Because of its altitude of about 1000 meters and the favorable climate Kolasin is considered a natural SPA area. Kolasin – Tara Bridge – Durmitor National Park

This morning we transfer towards Durmitor National Park. Along the way we stop in Tara bridge stands gloriously 172 m above the Tara river, Built from 1938 to 1940. In that time, the Djurdjevica Tara bridge was considered the most beautiful bridge in the Balkans – so beautiful that, according to one of the legends, it is believed the fairies helped build the bridge. We continue by road past the Tara Canyon, the second deepest in the world, and on to our accommodation in Durmitor National Park.
Durmitor & Tara Canyon (2523 m a.s.l.) offer majestic vistas of largely unspoilt mountains covered with coniferous woods, more than 20 peaks over 2200 m, 12 alpine lakes and the Tara Canyon, where 175 birds species were recorded (130 of them breeding birds).
In the dwarf pine zone we will look for Ring Ouzel, Dunnock, Tawny Pipit, Linnet, Nutcracker, Three-toed Woodpecker, Firecrest, Crested Tit, Wood Warbler, Siskin, as well as Bullfinch, Mistle Thrush, Coal Tit, etc. Other species include Tengmalm’s and Eagle Owls, Honey Buzzard, Short-toed and Golden Eagles, Peregrine, Lesser Grey and Red-backed Shrikes, etc.
Overnight with wonderful view of valley, forest and mountains.

Durmitor – Skakavac waterfall – Virpazar

We spend the morning exploring Durmitor’s UNESCO protected forests of conifer, juniper, fir and pine and looking out for some of the 163 bird species which have been recorded here: Black and Three-toed Woodpeckers, Nutcracker, Common Crossbill, Goshawk. In the afternoon, we begin the journey back to Virpazar and Lake Skadar via the impressive Skakavac waterfall. Our journey then continues towards the hillsides around the Skadar lake. The olive groves, Mediterranean shrubs and cliffs are home to Rock Partridge, Olive-tree Warbler, Sombre Tit, Western Rock Nuthatch, Blue Rock Thrush, Subalpine Warbler and Black-eared Wheatear. Virpazar – Ulcinj Salt Pod – Velika Plaza – Ada Bojana – Boat tour in Skadar Lake – Virpazar

In the morning we head ti Velika Plaza & Ada Bojana, south of the Ulcinj Town, two important areas endangered by encroachment of tourism facilities. Velika Plaza is bordered with sand dunes and adjoining grassland, forests and wetlands and is an important breeding area and migration stopover. In summer, almost 1% of the European population of Baillon’s Crake breeds here, as well as Collared Pranticoles, Stone Curlews and Rollers. Great Bustard also occurs here. Ada Bojana has almost 4 km long beach where Loggerhead Turtles lay their eggs. Behind it, in a forested area there is a mixed heronry where Pygmy Cormorants and Spoonbills breed. Other breeding birds include Stone Curlew and Nightjar.
Visit to the Ulcinj saltpans and Bojana Delta, Montenegro’s top site for waders. Right by the border with Albania, close to Lake Skadar’s exit to the sea via the Bojana river, lies a series of shallow pans with next to no vegetation. They attract an exciting array of water birds (241 species recorded) including Greater Flamingo, Collared Pratincole, Kentish Plover, Black-winged Stilt and Roller. The site is an Important Bird Area and considered one of Europe’s most important locations for winter migration with its position on the Southeast Europe flyway.
After lunch time boat ride on Lake Skadar, to search for the last surviving Dalmatian Pelicans of the lake. There is an abundance of Pygmy Cormorant, Squacco Heron and marsh terns.
